İF CLAUSES

A conditinal sentence has two clauses:Main clause+İf clauses


MAİN CLAUSES SUBORDİNATE CLAUSES

We can study the conditional clauses in three main ways

TYPE 1.Real conditions (Present - Future meaning)

TYPE 2.Present unreal conditions (Present-Future meaning)

TYPE 3.Past meaning (Past meaning)

(TYPE 1)REAL CONDİTİONS:
A .

İf+Simple Present Tense+Will-Can-May-Must+Verb

a)-İf you go to the party,you will have a good time.
b)-İf you run,you can catch the bus.
c)-İf you are tired,you must go to bed early.
B .

İf+Simple Present Tense+İmperative

a)-İf you don’t go to the party!
b)-İf it rains,take your umbrella!
=EXAMPLES=
1-İf it rains tomorrow,we will stay(stay) at home.
2-İf Walter gets the job,he will earn(earn) a lot of money.
3-İf it doesn’t rain(not rain)this afternoon,we will play football.
4-İf I seen (see)Emma,I will give her your message.
5-İf you don’t hurry,we will be(be)late for class.
6-İf Maria drives carefully,she won’t have(not have)any accidents.
7-İf you mail(mail)the letter,he may receive it on Monday.
8-He will go to the pharmacy if he need(need)some medicine.
9-İf Robin drinks(drink)too much coffee,he will feel(feel)ill.

(TYPE 2)PRESENT UNREAL:

This type of conditional sentence describes an action which is not real.


İf+Simple Past Tense+Would-Could-Should-Might+Verb

a)-İf you listened carefully,you would understand the lesson easily.
b)-İf I were you,I wouldn’t drive so fast.
c)-İf Oswald came early,he could help us.

=EXAMPLES=
1-İf Olivia had a lot of money,she would take(take)a long holiday.
2-İf Irene brushed(brush)her teeth regularly,she would have fewer cavities.
3-İf I got up early,I would be(be)there on time.
4-İf we helped each other,we would be(be)happier.
5-Mary would help the poor if she were (be)very rich.
6-Neil might not have the accident if he didn’t brake(not brake)suddenly.
7-The weather isn’t nice.I would take(take)a walk if the weather would were(be)nice
8-My wife couldn’t be(not be)angry with me if I came(come)home earlier.
9-İf Bill attended class regularly,he would make(make)a good progress.
10-İf Helen went(go)to bed earlier,she wouldn’t feel so tired.

İf Jim were not in love with Rosemary,he would not marry her.

İf I knew the answer,Icould tell you.

İf he need money,so he could looking for a job.
15-Ethel isn’t old enough,so her mother won’t let her go to the cinema.

18-İf I were (be)you,I would told(tell)her the truth about the matter.
19-İf I had (have)some matches,I would light(light) a fire.

(TYPE 3)PAST UNREAL:

This type of conditional sentence describes an unreal action in the past.

İf+Past Perfect Tense+Would-Could-Should-Might+Have+V(3)
a)-İf Mrs.Benson had worn her raincot,she wouldn’t have caught a cold.
b)-İf I hadn’t complained,Iwouldn’t have got my money back.
c)-İfmr.Newton haad had a driving licence,he would have got the job easily.
d)-They would have heard the news if they had listened to the radio.
=EXAMPLES=

1-İf Mrs.Hammer had been operated on immediately,her life could have been(be)saved.
2-İf Gordon had known(know)before,he could have lent me some money.
3-İf you had left(leave)fifteen minutes earlier,you could have caught the bus.
4-I would looked them up if I had known(know)they were living in Essex.
5-İf I had known(know)that you needed me,I could have come(come)at once.
6-İf Mr.Thompson had learn(learn)the truth,he would have been very angry.
7-Mr.Hobbs might have lent me his car if I had asked(ask) him.
8-Edward could have told(tell)lies if you had shouted at him.
9-İf we had born(born)in the sixteenth century,our lives would have been different.
10-İf Mrs.Poe had been walking carefully,she couldn’t have fallen(not fall)badly.
11-Ray spoke German so he got the scholarship.
İf Ray hadn’t spoken German,he wouldn’t have got the scholarship.
12-Diana didn’t marry him because he was not rich.
İf he had been rich,Diana would have married him.
13-Miriam invited me to her birthday party,so I went.
İf Miriam hadn’t invited me to her birthday I wouldn’t have gone.
14-Herbert didn’t enjoy the party becase he was shy.
İf Herbet had enjoyed the part he could have shy.
15- I didn’t Iagree with him,so Ididn’t sign the contract.
İf I had agree with him Iwouldn’t have signed the contract.
16-We would have gone(go)for a if it hadn’t rain(not rain)
17-İf I had known(know)about this yesterday,I wouldn’t have worried(no worry)all day long.
18-İf they had had(have)enough money,they wouldn’t have taken(not take)a trip to Florida.
19-İf I hadn’t paid(not pay)the money,wouldn’t have send(not send)it.
20-I would have telephoned(telephone)her if I had known(know)her telephone number.
